R Hackathon 1/Schedule

Original Schedule

Please Note Building will be open until 10:30 pm for anyone interested in working later. Please see one of the NESCent organizers if you will want access to the building after dinner and we can make sure you have keys or are accompanied by someone with keys. Charlene’s safe rides can give late night rides back to the hotel. Local restaurants are listed here.

Sun, 9th December

  • Noon - meet in the hotel lobby, we will pick up some lunch and go to a local state park for a walk to enjoy the fresh air and nice weather.
  • 6 pm Dinner. Meet in hotel lobby if you are interested - shuttle leaves for dinner at Watts Grocery.
  • 8-10 pm Reception at Millennium Hotel in the Alumni Room (drinks are to be purchased by participants. Sorry!)

Mon, 10 December

  • 8 am and 8.15 am Shuttle pickup from hotel
  • 8:10-8:30 am Coffee
  • 8:30 am Introduction to NESCent by NESCent staff
  • 8.45 am Introductions by all participants, including lightning package overviews, stressing future goals for the software
  • 9.35 am End-user perspectives followed by short overview of redundancy/missing items.
  • 10.05 am Coffee break
  • 10.15 am Brief overview of current standards and decision on standards.
  • 11.45 am Goal prioritization and subgroup formation
  • 12.15 pm Lunch (with newly formed subgroups)
  • 1.45 pm Subgroup work.
    • Bootcamps: S4, Vignettes, Version Control
  • 5-6 pm Reception at NESCent to meet NESCent postdocs and sabbatical scholars
  • 6:30 pm Dinner at place of your choosing
  • ~8:30 pm Shuttle to hotel from NESCent

Tues, 11 December

  • 8 am and 8.15 am Shuttle pickup from hotel
  • 8:10-8:30 am Coffee
  • 8:30 am-9:30 am Group updates and planning (~10 min per group).
  • 9:30 am-12 pm Work with group
  • 12-1:30 pm Lunch break (flexible)
  • 1:30-6 pm Work with group
  • 6:30 pm Dinner at Blue Corn Café on 9th St. ($33 - 3 course prix fixe meal inclusive of tax, tip and soft drinks - this will be paid for with your per diem. We have booked places for everyone please plan to attend!).
  • ~8:30 pm Shuttle to hotel from NESCent

Wed, 12 December

  • 8 am and 8.15 am Shuttle pickup from hotel
  • 8:10-8:30 am Coffee
  • 8:30 am-9:30 am Group updates and planning (~10 min per group).
  • 9:30 am-12 pm Work with group
  • 12-1:30 pm Lunch break (flexible)
  • 1:30-6 pm Work with group
  • 6 pm Shuttle to hotel for those wanting to return early
  • 6:30 pm Dinner at place of your choosing
  • ~8:30 pm Shuttle to hotel from dinner

Thurs, 13 December

  • 8 am and 8.15 am Shuttle pickup from hotel
  • 8:10-8:30 am Coffee
  • 8:30 am -9:30 am Group updates and planning (~10 min per group).
  • 9:30 am-12 pm Work with group
  • 12-1:30 pm Lunch break (flexible)
  • 1:30-3 pm Work with group
  • 3-6 pm Overview of progress so far and brainstorm of future direction in comparative analyses in R. (Remote participants especially encouraged to attend).
    • T1: plans for remaining time at hackathon and post-hackathon coding
    • T2: hackathon product plans (package(s), papers, talks)
    • T3: broader topics session: where do we see comparative methods going, what do we see as the user base/future development of methods in R vs Mesquite vs standalone vs bio[perl | python | ruby], what methods still need to be made, etc.
    • T4: what worked/didn't work at this hackathon so far?

  • 6:30 pm Group dinner at George’s Garage (tables have been reserved but people are free to order from the menu) with evening book awards.

Fri, 14 December

  • 8 am and 8.15 am Shuttle pickup from hotel

  • 8:30 am-12 pm Work with group

  • 1:30-4 pm Final wrap up for those still present and participants begin leaving
